At Close to Home, our work focuses on helping strengthen that system so people experiencing homelessness can access the right resources, at the right time, through a more connected and effective community response.
Homelessness Is More Than a Housing Issue
When people think about homelessness, housing is often the first thing that comes to mind. Stable housing is essential, but homelessness is rarely caused by one factor alone.
Many people experiencing homelessness may also be facing:
- Job loss or reduced income
- Rising rent or eviction
- Mental health challenges
- Family instability or domestic violence
- Medical issues or disability
- Lack of access to transportation
- Barriers to documentation or benefits
Because the causes are layered, the solutions must be coordinated. No single organization, shelter, agency, or program can solve homelessness alone.
What a Coordinated Response Means
A coordinated response brings local partners together around shared goals, shared data, and shared strategies. This includes nonprofit organizations, housing providers, healthcare partners, government agencies, outreach teams, service providers, and people with lived experience.
Instead of each organization working in isolation, a coordinated system helps ensure that services are connected and that people can move more efficiently toward housing stability.

The Role of Close to Home
Close to Home serves as the Continuum of Care Lead Agency for San Antonio and Bexar County. In this role, we help align partners, funding, planning, and performance across the local homeless response system.
Our work includes supporting community collaboration, improving system performance, strengthening data-informed decision-making, and helping partners work toward a shared goal: making homelessness rare, brief, and nonrecurring.

Homelessness touches every part of a community. It affects public health, neighborhoods, schools, local businesses, emergency systems, and families. That is why lasting progress requires a community-wide response.
When partners work together, they can better understand what is happening across the system and respond with strategies that are more effective and sustainable.
